Industrial digital transformation puts forward strict requirements for deterministic, low latency and high reliable network performance. Time‑Sensitive Networking, commonly known as TSN, has become one of the core technical foundations for next‑generation industrial networks thanks to its outstanding capabilities in open protocol, deterministic bearing and cross‑vendor interoperability. Global standardization bodies keep advancing related specifications, while 3GPP has rolled out 5G‑TSN standards starting from Release 16 for diverse industrial use cases.

China has built a relatively complete TSN standard matrix. YD/T 6114‑2024 marks the country’s first industry standard targeting joint deployment of TSN and 5G mobile fronthaul networks within Industrial Internet scenarios. Led by China Information and Telecommunication Group and jointly compiled by 17 industry participants, this document defines typical deployment scenarios, architectural prerequisites, service specifications, network rollout rules and network‑element requirements. Its release lays a formal normative basis for coordinated implementation of TSN and cellular mobile networks across industrial sites.

Existing TSN standards cover multiple dimensions including core technologies, product specifications and practical deployment requirements. From a technical perspective, critical capabilities involve time synchronization, traffic scheduling, reliable transmission, operation maintenance and unified configuration control. These technical requirements are mapped onto diverse product forms, including switches, gateways, chip modules, end‑side equipment, network controllers, complete solution packages and test instruments. Such products further empower real‑world vertical sectors such as rail transit, non‑ferrous metallurgy, equipment manufacturing, electric power, mining and vehicle‑borne industrial terminals.

Real‑world Challenges for TSN‑5G Convergence Deployment

Even with well‑defined standard specifications, factories still face practical obstacles when rolling out converged TSN and 5G networks. Operators and industrial enterprises need core network solutions that can align 5G QoS mechanisms with TSN time‑aware scheduling. It calls for flexible service orchestration, precise time‑aware traffic management and seamless interworking between mobile core network functions and local industrial TSN equipment. Many legacy core network platforms lack native support for these converged industrial capabilities and bring high upgrade expenses.
