Spectrum shortage lead to sharp rise in 5G cost?

According to a piece of latest news from GSMA, the organization called on Global Regulator to improve the availability of mid-band spectrum, and warned that if the United Nations networking speed target is to be achieved without additional allocation, each city may spend more billions of dollars and have a higher carbon footprint. Not only for that, the number of antennas and base stations needed will lead to higher carbon emissions and consumer prices.

The above conclusion was drawn from a study by Coleago Consulting, it estimates that the total cost of 5G deployment per city in areas with less than 800 MHz to 1000 MHz spectrum will rise by $782 million to $5.8 billion. The additional cost comes from the increase in the number of base stations required and related overhead. GSMA points out that in some areas, it is impossible to realize the full potential of 5G without additional spectrum assets.

GSMA warned that the mobile industry should need an average of 2 GHz of mid-brand spectrum in every city in order to meet the United Nations’ International Telecommunications Union (ITU) data speed requirements.

The World Radiocommunication Conference in 2023 is a vital opportunity to align global policies for mobile mid-band solutions. The ITU targets of 100 Mbps download speeds and 50 Mbps upload speeds should be provided by mobile operators to meet future needs of consumers and businesses, which is evaluated according to the population density index. But these are all exclude cities with large numbers of commuters or tourists.

GSMA pointed out that policymakers should set spectrum standards for mobile operators like 3.5 GHz, 4.8 GHz and, 6 GHz to meet the ITU’s requirements by 2030.
It also added that using the mid-band spectrum to achieve these goals would minimize the environmental impact, thereby reducing consumer costs of 5G. IPLOOK always prepares ourselves for high reliabulity 5G Core network. Looking forward to your consulting.
